Default Band Camp: What to Bring Checklist

For those of you who are freshmen and don't know what to expect from band camp (or those upperclassmen who still forget to bring their music/drill to practice ), here's what you need to bring.
  1. ! ! ! WATER ! ! ! Please remember to bring a LARGE water Jug for practice. One 20 oz bottle will NOT last you more then an hour during practice.
  2. Sunscreen! Your going to be spending as much as 5-6 hours outside in the sun so unless you are an oddity of nature and don't burn, bring sunscreen.
  3. Tennis Shoes. Nothing else. You can't march in Flip-flops or heals, don't even try.
  4. Water
  5. Comfortable Clothes. If you get warm easily, then wear shorts and a tank top, it will be hot.
  6. A three ring binder with sheet protectors. Like this for your Music and Marching Drill.
  7. Lunch or make plans with others to go get food. The Vons Shopping Center is within walking distance and has PPK, Subway, Vons (Deli) and maybe Sushi.
  8. More Water
  9. Pencils ~ John Carlo
  10. Dot Book ~ John Carlo
  11. You should also consider bring sunglasses, hats or visors. ~ Julie Anne
Upperclassmen, feel free to add to this list if I missed something.

Things you do NOT need to bring to Band Camp:
  • A Bad Attitude. I don't know if somethings got you upset but arguing with other students or the instructors only makes things harder for everyone.
  • iPods, MP3 Players, CD Players, etc (unless they're for Lunch ONLY). You can't listen to music and hear all the instructions that your expected to hear.
  • Energy Drinks. Whatever Garbage the label tries to sell you about "boosting your bodies energy", Energy Drinks are, more often then not very bad for you. If you need a first hand proof, ask Nick T what happened when he drank a couple Monsters before a competition
  • When buying "good marching shoes" for band camp, please don't buy converse. They seem like a good shoe to march in, but by the time band camp is over they will be killer on your feet, and your converse will most likely be ruined. ~Tamera
  • Jewelry ~ Natalina
Again, Upperclassmen can add to this list also.

A few more notes about how Camp works.
  • Band Camp goes from 8:00am - 11:30am, Lunch, 1:00pm - 5:30pm.
  • Typically Mornings are Marching Practice, and Afternoons are for Music Rehearsals but be prepared for changes.
  • Early is On Time, On Time is Late. Everyone meets in the Multipurpose Room ready to start warm-ups AT 8:00.
  • Do NOT keep any food inside the Multipurpose room or the Band Room, Lewis IS an Ant Hill and if there is any food anywhere, they will find it .
  • Extra shirt suggested (if you don't mind wearing the same sweaty grimy shirt all day, change into a new one at lunch)

Another thing to add to the DO NOT bring list,
when buying "good marching shoes" for band camp, please don't buy converse.
They seem like a good shoe to march in, but by the time band camp is over they will be killer on your feet, and your converse will most likely be ruined. Get tennis shoes :]

Also, bring your instrument, drill, and music everyday.

One correction.....Band Camp is going to 5:30 this year. There will be jugs of water available to refill your water bottles....and snacks for break time....
Pretty sure we are having a pool party on Fri. Aug. 17 AFTER Band Camp...we will have pizza right after camp at Centenial park and swim until about 8:30 or 9:00....You will get complete details at camp....pass the word...

One thing to add to the DO NOT BRING List:
-Jewelry. Unless you really don't care about it and you really know it's band-camp proof, I suggest you don't wear it nor bring it. You need to pay attention to what you are doing, and sometimes stuff like that can be a distraction. Plus, it's not very fun having stuff get caught in your clothes, hair, instrument, or (particularly guardies) getting hurt from something slamming into your jewelry before your skin.

You should also consider bring sunglasses, hats or visors.

Also PLEASE bring your own water: insulated water jugs suggested or even a Nalgene water bottle.

PENCIL!! ALWAYS have one. tape it to a string and tie it to your binder and dot book

extra shirt suggested (if you don't mind wearing the same sweaty grimy shirt all day, change into a new one at lunch)

One other thing:
Eat breakfast EVERYDAY.
You need the energy and we don't want you falling faint during practice from starvation.
NOTE: If you have a sensitive stomach, I suggest not drinking any milk for breakfast. You'll be marching outside in the heat of the sun and the milk would start to curd in your stomach and you might throw, just a forewarning.

Also, conserve your energy wisely!!! No, I'm not talking about electricity, I'm talking about your body energy. As if don't run around like an idiot during lunch. You will have nothing left for marching/playing if you do. That was one of my mistakes as a freshman. I wound up nearly passing out one afternoon at band camp.

Also do your best, but not to the point where you're overworking yourself. You might not feel it at first, but after a few weeks you'll feel it in a big way. That was one of my lessons as a sophomore: after three intense weeks of band camp and six weeks of 8-class school days (plus all the rehersals) I contracted Mononucleosis (AKA Mono or the Kissing Disease). If you don't know what it is, lemme just tell you that it's not a fun thing to get. Period.

(Hey I have an idea: the night before or the morning of the first day of full band camp, somebody print this entire topic so we could read to or show all the newbies what wisdom they could learn from the upperclassman, since not everyone uses the Band Forum.)

I heard band camp started at 8:45 and ended and 5:45 this year. At least thats what the calendar and Haley said last I checked. hmmmm?

another thing to bring....if you are falling apart like me and have bad knees or ankles or wrists or back any other body part bring any braces you might need. Being in pain is not fun
